Randy Rhoads’ musical life — from the moment he first picked up a guitar to the day of his final concert and tragic death.

Randy Rhoads: Full Musical Timeline (Early Life → Ozzy → Final Concert → Death)

When Randy Rhoads Started Playing

  • Born 6 December 1956 in Santa Monica, California.
  • Grew up in a musical household — both parents were music teachers, and his mother Delores ran Musonia School of Music.
  • Began playing guitar around age 7–8.
  • His first teacher was Scott Shelly, who quit after less than a year because Randy had surpassed him.

Who Taught Him & His Teaching Years

Early Teachers

  • Delores Rhoads (mother) — taught him to read music and gave foundational training.
  • Scott Shelly — early rock guitar teacher who admitted Randy quickly outgrew him.

Randy as a Teacher

  • By his teens, Randy was already teaching guitar at Musonia, his mother’s school.
  • He continued teaching even after joining Ozzy, giving lessons on tour whenever possible — a testament to how seriously he took education.

His Classical Studies

  • Randy had a deep love for classical guitar, studying it formally and privately.
  • He blended classical harmony, pedal‑point runs, and Baroque‑influenced sequences into metal — helping create what became known as neoclassical metal.
  • Shortly before his death, he was considering leaving rock temporarily to study classical guitar full‑time.

Early Bands Before Ozzy
Randy was extremely active in the LA club scene:

Key Bands

BandNotes
The WhoreFirst band with Kelly Garni (formed in school).
Violet FoxCover band with his brother Kelle.
Mildred PierceShort‑lived project.
The Katzenjammer KidsAnother early band that dissolved quickly.
Quiet RiotCo‑founded at age 16; became a major LA club act.

Quiet Riot gave him visibility, but they hadn’t broken through in the US yet — which set the stage for the biggest audition of his life.

How Randy Got the Audition for Ozzy Osbourne

  • In 1979, Ozzy was in LA searching for a new guitarist after leaving Black Sabbath.
  • Dana Strum (future bassist of Slaughter) recommended Randy and literally drove him to the audition.
  • Randy brought his white Les Paul and a small practice amp.
  • He began warming up — and Ozzy hired him before he even finished playing.
  • Ozzy later said it felt like “a gift from God.”

This audition led to:

  • Blizzard of Ozz (1980)
  • Diary of a Madman (1981)
Two of the most influential metal albums ever recorded.

Randy Rhoads’ Final Concert

  • Date: 18 March 1982
  • Location: Knoxville Civic Coliseum, Knoxville, Tennessee
  • Tour: Diary of a Madman
  • He performed at peak ability — fans recall him being in especially good spirits.

This was the last time he ever played live.

How Randy Rhoads Died

  • Date of death: 19 March 1982 (the morning after the Knoxville show).
  • The band stopped in Leesburg, Florida for bus repairs.
  • The tour bus driver, Andrew Aycock, who also had access to a small Beechcraft plane, took several people on “joyrides.”
  • Randy was convinced to go up for a short flight.
  • Aycock attempted to buzz the tour bus, making low passes.
  • On the third pass, the plane’s wing clipped the bus, crashed into a tree, and exploded.
  • Randy, Aycock, and makeup artist Rachel Youngblood were all killed instantly.
  • Aycock’s pilot license was expired, and toxicology reports indicated cocaine in his system.

Randy was 25 years old.
